SMA To Hold Continuing Medical Education Conference for Physicians and Healthcare Professionals in New York This December

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July, 2014 -- Southern Medical Association (SMA) will hold its 11th Annual Conference on Medical Dilemmas in Patient Care at the Westin New York Grand Central Hotel in New York, December 19-21, 2014.  The 2014 event will focus on cardiovascular disease, neurological conditions, endocrine disorders, newly approved FDA drugs, and safe use of opioids for pain management.  Credits for participation include AMA PRA Category 1 Credits for physicians and Nursing Contact Hours. The conference, chaired by Dr. Jan Basile of Charleston, South Carolina, incorporates adult learning methods including didactic lecture presentation supported by practical cases. “Physicians learn more and can more easily apply their learning to practice when real-life, difficult case presentations lead the way to understanding,” according to Dr. Basile. “That is why all of the faculty for this conference have set aside time in the schedule for case presentation and interactive Q&A with attendees.”

Dr. Jan Basile is a Professor of Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine/Geriatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and treats high-risk patients with hypertension and hyperlipidemia at the University’s Seinsheimer Clinic and is the former Chief of Primary Care Service Line for the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston.  Dr. Basile has been a research participant in numerous large clinical trials on management of blood pressure, a key interest of his practice.  Dr. Basile’s conference lectures will focus on hypertension, new cholesterol guidelines, and heart failure.

As conference chair, Dr. Basile has assembled a faculty of experienced, practicing physicians including Veronica K. Piziak, MD, PhD, Emeritus Director, Division of Endocrinology and Director, Diabetes Center for Scott & White Healthcare and Professor of Medicine, Endocrinology, and Social and Behavioral Health for Texas A&A School of Rural Public Health in Temple, Texas.  Dr. Piziak will lecture on diabetes management, obesity and bariatric drugs, osteoporosis and thyroid disease.  The neurological focus will be addressed by Jeffrey W. Clark, DO, Vice-Chairman, Department of Neurology for Scott & White Healthcare and Associate Professor of Medicine for Texas A&M University College of Medicine in Temple, Texas.  Dr. Clark will discuss Parkinson’s disease, dementia, and patients with spells.  A comprehensive review of newly approved FDA drugs will be presented by C. Wayne Weart, PharmD, BCPS, FASHP, FAPhA, Professor, Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Outcome Sciences for the South Carolina College of Pharmacy and Professor of Family Medicine at MUSC in Charleston, South Carolina.  Dr. Weart has been trained in the Extended Release/Long Acting Opioid Analgesic REMS (Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy) education requirements issued by the FDA and will be presenting a 3-hour session entitled, “The SCOPE of Pain: Safe and Competent Opioid Prescribing Education. This course is presented in collaboration with Boston University School of Medicine and meets requirements for opioid prescribing continuing medical education.
