Target Audience

This activity is intended for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and other allied healthcare professionals specializing or certified in the areas of women’s health, gynecology, obstetrics, internal medicine, family or general medicine, pediatrics and adolescent medicine, emergency medicine, and preventive medicine.

Goals and Objectives

The birth rate among U.S. adolescents and young adults (age 15-19) reached a historic low in 2015 at 22.3 per 1000 women. Despite decreases, the U.S. still has the highest adolescent pregnancy rate among developed countries. In addition, the sexual risk behaviors of the young also put them at risk for unintended health outcomes such as sexually transmitted infections. In this activity, clinicians will learn about counseling adolescent patients on methods to reduce sexual risk behaviors and unintended pregnancies, screen for sexually transmitted infections, and importance of the HPV vaccination. Upon completion of the activity, providers should be able to:

  • Understand implications of adolescent sexual behaviors;
  • Discuss the importance of the contraceptive health visit in the adolescent;
  • Screen for sexually transmitted infections;
  • Counsel on the importance of the Human Papillomavirus Vaccine;
  • Understand the pre-exposure prophylaxis for the prevention of Human Immunodeficiency Virus.
