Target Audience

This activity is of value healthcare providers who are involved with rehabilitation of burn patients. Hand burn assessment and documentation tips for elongation will be discussed.

Goals and Objectives

This course will address aspects of the rehabilitation of a patient with burn injuries as related to hand burn assessment/measuring movement, and documentation for elongation. Instructors will highlight important components of coding, how to phrase documentation, and rehabilitation evaluation components for hand burns. Upon completion, learners should be better prepared to:

  • Phrase development to record movement;
  • Explain rehabilitation evaluation components for hand burns;
  • Demonstrate the figure of eight technique for measuring hand edema;
  • Explain the process of tissue differentiation in regards to ROM loss;
  • Describe the anatomical considerations that commonly influence ROM;
  • Describe signs of motor loss for commonly affected nerve distributions.

Scott Dewey, PT, CHT has been practicing for 23 years and the last 15 years have been in burns working at the U.S. Army Burn Center in San Antonio, Texas.  He currently serves as the Chief of Rehabilitation and is active in research, teaching, administration, and clinical practice.

Sandra Fletchall, OTR/L, CHT, MPA, FAOTA has been practicing for over 45 years in the area of trauma, burns and limb loss. She is currently the Manager of Burn Rehabilitation in the Firefighters Burn Center, Memphis, Tennessee.  In addition to patient services, she is involved in teaching, research, staff and program development. She has assisted with establishing SOAR program within Burn Center in Memphis, Tennessee.  She has authored numerous chapters and journal articles on burn rehabilitation and upper limb loss rehabilitation. She has been awarded the AOTA Rooster of Fellows and ABA Barbara Knothe Therapist Award.
