Target Audience

This activity is intended for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and other allied healthcare professionals specializing or certified in the areas of women’s health, gynecology, obstetrics, internal medicine, family or general medicine, pediatrics and adolescent medicine, emergency medicine, and preventive medicine.

Goals and Objectives

Nearly 51% of the 6.6 million pregnancies each year in the United States are unintended. An unintended pregnancy has immediate implications for a woman and her family and far-reaching implications for society. It is important for clinicians to discuss family planning with patients and counsel them on current contraceptive options. This activity will review recent contraceptive updates for hormonal, non-hormonal, and surgical options. Upon completion of the activity, providers should be able to:

  • Advise patients about contraceptive choices using the 2016 CDC released guideline updates for the US Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use (US MEC);
  • Recognize permanent contraception updates for both hysteroscopic occlusion and total salpingectomy;
  • Identify hormonal contraception and the risk of breast cancer;
  • Understand emergency contraception updates.
