Target Audience

Southern Medical Journal (SMJ) is an interdisciplinary, multi-specialty Journal, and articles span the spectrum of medical topics, providing timely, up-to-date information for primary care physicians and specialists alike. The SMJ enables physicians to provide the best possible care to patients in this age of rapidly changing modern medicine.  Therefore, the readers of the SMJ are an appropriate target for this article.

Goals and Objectives

Discrimination and bias in clinical training often take the form of microaggressions, which, albeit unintentional, are detrimental to the learning environment and well-being of students. Although there are a few reports of medical schools training students to respond to microaggressions, none have included a complementery student-led faculty training module. 

The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a case-based approach to improving student resilience and increasing faculty awareness of microaggressions in the clinical setting. At the conclusion of the activity, learners should be better prepared to:

  • Recognize “microaggressions”.
  • Describe the impact of “microaggressions” on the well-being of individuals and learning environment.
  • Develop increased awareness of “microaggressions”.
  • Develop increased faculty awareness and student resilience with respect to “microaggressions” in the clinical teaching settings.
  • Implement interventions that promote improved awareness of “microaggressions” and reduce negative impacts of “microaggressions”.
