Target Audience

This course is of interest to internal medicine physicians / hospitalists. The information presented may also benefit allied healthcare professionals including nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants.

Course Description

The evaluation and assessment of resident physician clinical skills and knowledge are becoming increasingly complex.  Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education requirements for evaluation require a more uniform approach for faculty, with expectations for achieving common milestones during their progressive levels of training becoming more specific.  Although the specialty of hospital medicine is relatively young, the intensity of the contact with trainees, particularly in the critical and acute care hospital setting, provides hospitalists with a unique opportunity for formative assessment and constructive evaluations.  The perspectives outlined will be helpful in informing hospitalists on their roles in resident physician assessment and evaluation. At the conclusion of this activity, the learner should be able to:

  • Identify evaluation strategies to utilize in teaching roles with resident physicians
  • Understand the role of faculty development in the evaluative process
  • Explain the increase in hospitalists across the US healthcare system
