Target Audience

Southern Medical Journal (SMJ) is an interdisciplinary, multi-specialty Journal, and articles span the spectrum of medical topics, providing timely, up-to-date information for primary care physicians and specialists alike. The SMJ enables physicians to provide the best possible care to patients in this age of rapidly changing modern medicine.  Therefore, the readers of the SMJ are an appropriate target for this article.

Goals and Objectives

Patients with β-lactam allergies often receive nonpreferred antibiotics for the treatment of their infections. Many patients do not have true immunoglobulin E–mediated reactions and could safely receive the preferred treatment agents. The impact of β-lactam allergies on antimicrobial prescribing is less studied in the outpatient setting. This study emphasizes that the receipt of nonpreferred and inappropriate antibiotics remains a major issue within this setting, and also that there is a need for further evaluation of a patient’s β-lactam allergy before prescribing antimicrobials. At the conclusion of the session, learners should be better prepared to:

  • Understand the impact of prescribing non-preferred antibiotics to a patient with a suspected beta-lactam allergy;
  • Consider the use of a beta-lactam allergy assessment protocol to determine risk and safety of prescribing beta-lactams;
  • Develop a clinical plan for the administration of beta-lactam allergy skin testing to identify the safety of prescribing to patients with a history of beta-lactam allergy.
