Target Audience

Southern Medical Journal (SMJ) is an interdisciplinary, multi-specialty Journal, and articles span the spectrum of medical topics, providing timely, up-to-date information for primary care physicians and specialists alike. The SMJ enables physicians to provide the best possible care to patients in this age of rapidly changing modern medicine.  Therefore, the readers of the SMJ are an appropriate target for this article.

Goals and Objectives

As medical care progresses, patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities are living longer and beginning to experience diseases that commonly afflict the aging population, such as osteoporosis. Osteoporosis and resultant fractures increase disability and threaten the independence of this vulnerable population. In addition, the diagnosis, prevention, and management of osteoporosis present unique challenges in these patients. Certain medications and insufficient bone growth during childhood contribute to the development osteoporosis in adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This course addresses special considerations related to the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis in adult patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities. At the conclusion of the activity, learners should be better prepared to:

  • Understand the additional risks for osteoporosis in adult patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) that could lead to fractures, pain, and other morbidities.
  • Describe the pathophysiologic mechanisms for abnormal bone resorption to bone deposition ratio in adult patients with IDD that increase morbidity risks.
  • Develop alternative options for diagnostic imaging studies to identify osteoporosis in patients unable to have the standard dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan.
  • Consider the alternative and complementary treatment options for osteoporosis in IDD patients that may be required due to their special needs.
