Goals and Objectives

Ryan Alexander, a fourth-year medical student at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and Dr. Donald DiPette, the Health Sciences Distinguished Professor at the University of South Carolina/University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia offer insight and perspective regarding residency interviewing during the COVID-19 pandemic. During this conversation they touch on many areas, including the components of virtual interviews and social events, potential advantages and drawbacks of not interviewing in person, the recommendations the Association of American Medical Colleges has made to address residency interview allocation, and how the match process may differ in 2021 from previous years. Mr. Alexander and Dr. DiPette also share their thoughts on what they believe the future of residency interviews may look like, as well as provide advice to those who will soon begin the residency interview process. At the conclusion of the podcast, the learner should:

  • Have increased knowledge of how to prepare for interviewing in a virtual environment
  • Be familiar with/aware of the Association of American Medical Colleges’ recommendations regarding residency interview allocation
  • Be able to identify advantages and disadvantages of virtual residency interviews
