Goals & Objectives
By mid-adolescence, girls are more than twice as likely to be diagnosed with a mood disorder as boys, with the prevalence at adult levels, 14 to 20 percent. Serious issues that are directly associated with teenage depression and anxiety include suicidal thinking (or behavior), and substance abuse. Adolescent girls are more likely to have experienced cyberbullying in their lifetime. There is a strong association between bullying and suicide-related behaviors, but this relationship is often mediated by other factors, including depression, violent behavior, and substance abuse. Primary care providers have expressed perceptions of inadequate preparation to address mental health problems in the adolescent population and with proper training, may play a major role in appropriately treating, managing, and/or referring these patients. The goal of this session is to assist the learner to establish protocols and procedures to identify and/or prevent struggling teens suffering from depression. Upon completion of the activity, providers should be able to:
- Recognize risk factors for suicide;
- Appropriately utilize mental health and suicide risk screening tools;
- Establish protocols and procedures to identify and manage struggling teens who may be suffering from depression.

Jennifer Wells, MD
Dr. Jennifer Wells is a California native raised in the suburbs of Washington, DC. She is a Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude graduate of the University of California at Davis with a BS in biological sciences. Following graduation from college she spent two years at The National Institutes of Health researching the intricacies of adipose metabolism in Cushing Syndrome. Thereafter, she attended Georgetown University School of Medicine and graduated as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. She did her internship at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) and went on to complete her first residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at UCSF. After working in the private sector for several years, she then went on to complete a second residency in Psychiatry at the Virginia Tech-Carilion Clinic. Having graduated from her psychiatry residency in 2015, she has accepted a position at Carilion Clinic’s Department of Psychiatry where she is actively involved in creating a women’s health center specializing in treating psychiatric illness in pregnancy, as well as, managing substance use disorders in pregnancy.
