With open enrollment right around the corner, millions of Americans will resume the search for health insurance and the most commonly used source will be the Healthcare.gov website. Should it be?

In his September 22 Infopackets.com article, “Healthcare.gov Remains Unstable, Vulnerable: Report,” Brandon Dimmel details several concerns that should at least be considered before diving in with your personal information. The article suggests that there are some basic security issues that have been reported regarding the website and that could enable hackers to access your personal information. To be honest, all sites are vulnerable to some degree and I would imagine that most of the issues reported have either been fixed or at least addressed, but what may be more telling is the handling of known issues.

Dimmel’s article states that “the administration has failed to consistently apply security patches to Healthcare.gov, leaving the site vulnerable to hackers.” This implies that even if the current issues are fixed, what will happen a week or month or year down the road when the latest security issue is found – will it take several months to a year to implement a fix?

Questions have surfaced claiming the Healthcare.gov website was launched despite the Obama administration being aware of these vulnerabilities and doing more to try and hide them than actually fix them. Fire or not, there does appear to be some smoke and it is up to you to decide whether to share your personal information on the Healthcare.gov website, or any of the other options available to you.
