Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler was the first African American woman to earn a medical degree? She received her Doctress of Medicine degree in 1864 and afterward began practicing medicine as a general practitioner in Boston. When the Civil War ended, Dr. Crumpler and her husband, also a physician, moved her practice to Richmond, Virginia, to help care for recently freed slaves.  She eventually returned to Boston and cared primarily for women and children.

Dr. Charles Richard Drew is considered the inventor of the blood bank? A surgeon and researcher, Dr. Drew’s developed methods for improving blood storage techniques, leading to the first wide-scale blood banks which were used during World War II. He was also the first African American surgeon to serve as an examiner for the American Board of Surgery.
