2023 Updates in GIM: Pickles, Waterfalls, and More

Presented by Dr. Christopher Jackson

Over the last year, the importance of keeping up to date with the clinical literature has never been more necessary. In this presentation, we will review practice-changing updates that occurred between May 2022 and March 2023. Highlights from this presentation will include the use of SGLT2i in patients with non-diabetic CKD, fluid resuscitation intensity in acute pancreatitis, pickle juice for muscle cramps in cirrhosis, diuretics in heart failure, tirzepatide for obesity management, and optimal VTE prophylaxis after hip and knee arthroplasty.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the attendee should be able to:

  • Identify the three rules of evidence-based medicine/practice.
  • Define the criteria for determining if evidence is practice changing or not.
  • Evaluate 5 recent practice-changing articles in general internal medicine.
  • Assess the limitations of evidence for clinical questions in PICO format.
