Join your colleagues for SMA's Medical Dilemmas in Patient Care conference, where Deepa Kirk, MD will address the quiz questions and much more during his lecture, "Medical Evaluation and Management of Osteoporosis."
This presentation will outline the basic evaluation for patients with osteoporosis, and reasons to conduct a more thorough search for secondary causes. The speaker will review indications for treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis and briefly touch upon osteoporosis in men and pre-menopausal women. The bulk of the session will be devoted to management of postmenopausal osteoporosis, including non-pharmacologic measures; pharmacologic agents with focus on bisphosphonates, teriparatide, and denosumab; and recommendations for treatment duration and monitoring.
Upon completion, attendees should be better prepared to:
- Discuss the basic history, physical, and lab evaluation for postmenopausal osteoporosis; and the indications for treatment with an osteoporosis drug
- List the mechanism of action, expected benefits, and potential risks for the available classes of medications to treat osteoporosis
- Recognize the controversies in osteoporosis management, including duration of therapy and recommendations for monitoring over time
