A Conversation with Dr. Michael Englesbe: Opioid Prescribing and the CDC’s Latest Recommendations

Dr. Errington Thompson, professor of surgery at Marshall University’s Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, and Dr. Michael Englesbe who is the Cyrenus G. Darling Sr., MD and Cyrenus G. Darling Jr., MD Professor and Head of Transplant Surgery at the University of Michigan and the Director of the Michigan Surgical Quality Collaborative (MSQC), as well as the Co-Director of the Opioid Prescribing and Engagement Network, discuss the CDC’s newest recommendations on opioid prescribing for pain management, as well possible strategies to reduce the total amount of opioids given to patients in the immediate postoperative period. Using different scenarios, they will also talk about ways opioids were being overprescribed.
