Acute Obstetric Yellow Artrophy Presenting as Idiopathic Hyperuricemia

Authors: MARTIN M. QUIGLEY MD

Abstract

Abstract:A fatal case of acute obstetric yellow atrophy (of Sheehan) in a twin gestation is presented and the literature is reviewed. The unique aspects of the case included an isolated hyperuricemia detected ten days before either clinical or laboratory evidence of hepatic decompensation, and the concomitant occurrence of a disseminated intravascular coagulopathy at the onset of clinical deterioration. Subsequent laboratory investigation and therapeutic management of the failure of multiple organ systems are described and discussed.
