Mycobacterium fortuitum Abscess Related to Surgery, Malignancy, and a Tight Girdle

Abstract

AbstractMycobacterium fortuitum, a rapid-growing, acid-fast bacillus of Runyan's group 4, produced a localized abscess at the site of a surgical incisional scar. Underlying malignancy and pressure from a tight girdle are discussed as factors that may have enhanced the growth of a normally soprophytic organism, probably introduced into the wound during the surgical procedure. The risk of this organism as an agent of iatrogenic infection is reviewed
