Authors: R. REX HARRIS M.D., KURT M. W. NIEMANN M.D., A. GIL DIETHELM MD

Abstract

AbstractReview of 48 renal transplant recipients showed that 15 (31%) developed avascular necrosis at a total of 30 anatomic sites after transplantation. The femoral head was the most common site of avascular necrosis; eight of the 14 patients with avascular necrosis of the femoral head had bilateral involvement. Surgical replacement of the femoral head in eight instances has been successful. Other skeletal complications included six fractures. Etiologic theories and possible correlation between avascular necrosis and steroid dosage are discussed.
