In the Wake of the Tsunami: A Physician’s Perspective

Authors: Allen R. Dyer, MD, PhD

Abstract

Cancer entered my life like a tsunami. I speak metaphorically, of course. Catastrophes like a malignant diagnosis, the loss of a loved one, or any of the various disappointments of life arrive unexpectedly, sweep away everything that is familiar, and leave disorganization and the need to adjust to a new reality. But generally, they affect an individual, a family, maybe a community. Mass disasters tear away the communities that so crucially support individuals in times of grief, and spirituality has an important role in surviving.
