CME Mission

The mission of the continuing medical education (CME) program of Southern Medical Association is to plan, conduct, evaluate, and continuously improve educational activities with emphasis on evidence-based clinical and research topics.  These activities are designed for diverse teams of healthcare professionals to foster professional development, enhance the provision of quality, and disease prevention.  The expected results are to foster teamwork across specialties and professions, improve professional competence, or performance in practice.

Purpose

The CME mission of the Southern Medical Association (SMA) is to advance the health of patients through advocacy, leadership, education and service through the continuing professional education of healthcare professionals with responsibility for, or interest in, caring for people.  SMA works towards providing quality health promotion programs aimed to engage and empower healthcare professionals and communities to choose health behaviors, and make changes that reduce the risk of developing chronic disease and other co-morbidities.

Expected Results

The SMA CME Program will enhance physician knowledge, competence, performance or patient outcomes.  The impact of educational activities will be evaluated utilizing assessment tools that demonstrate qualitative and/or quantitative measures of change,

Types of Activities

Activities will be designed to enhance knowledge, competence, performance, or patient outcomes with innovative and effective learning formats that may include live activities, enduring materials, journal-based education, and performance improvement projects.  The CME Program encourages innovative use of new technologies and approaches to enhance physician learning skills and the translation of changes into practice.  The CME program will seek partnerships with other health related entities to expand the scope of learning as relates to physician practice and the practice team.  The CME Program is integrated with SMA’s mission to extend CME to community-based physicians throughout the southern states.

Content Areas

The Office of Continuing Medical Education’s (OCME) CME Program supports the strategic priorities of the SMA. Content addresses those priorities including areas such as risk management, public health, the practice environment, leadership and administration, public policy and tools for performance improvement. The CME Program provides a forum for the exchange of information and ideas on current practice trends, evidence-based medicine and the delivery of high quality, equitable and cost effective care.

Target Audience

Learning activities will be directed to SMA members, the broader physician community, their practice/clinical teams, and interested healthcare professionals.

"MedGlobal included Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits at its annual conference for the first time in 2023. This initiative not only enhanced the MedGlobal's conference educational value but also showcased MedGlobal's commitment to supporting ongoing professional development. The inclusion of CME credits fostered greater engagement among attendees and underscored MedGlobal's dedication to advancing healthcare education."

I wanted to share my reflections on our recent collaboration with SMA for the Melanoma Provider Symposium held on September 1, 2025. Working with SMA, with the exceptional representation of Susan Gonzalez and Randy Glick, was undoubtedly one of our best decisions, even though it was made at the last moment. Their outstanding organization and meticulous attention to detail were evident throughout the entire process. They guided us confidently and were present at every meeting and with every request for assistance. Susan, in particular, stood out for her professionalism and extensive knowledge. She provided tireless support, right up to the very last moments before the symposium and even continued to assist us in the days that followed. Her dedication and expertise were truly invaluable, and they significantly contributed to making our collaboration with SMA a seamless and positive experience. Given our remarkable experience, we have already recommended SMA to other departments within Providence seeking a reliable and capable partner. The positive feedback we've received further reinforces our confidence in SMA's ability to deliver exceptional results.
