Goals and Objectives

This session will discuss system level and individual level practical solutions to healthcare workers dealing with burnout amidst the convergence of multiple pandemics. Using personal stories and changes enacted at the system level in our institution, we want to start a conversation around a prescription for addressing wellness from the healthcare worker perspective.

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner should be able to:

  1. Define physician burnout.
  2. Identify the major contributing factors to physician burnout.
  3. Review theoretical frameworks for mitigating burnout.
  4. Evaluate system, organizational and individual practices to reduce the impact of burnout.

This activity is designed to be completed within the time designated; learners should claim only those credits that reflect the time actually spent in the activity. To successfully earn credit, participants must complete the activity online during the valid credit period noted, following these steps:

Upon successful completion of these components, your certificate will be processed and emailed from customerservice@sma.org within approximately 1 hour. Speakers

Christopher Jackson, MD, FACP, FSSCI
Dr. Christopher Jackson serves as Associate Professor of Medicine, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, and Senior Associate Program Director for Curriculum at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) Internal Medicine Residency. A native of Augusta, GA, he graduated from Emory University with a degree in Biology and Sociology. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree at the Medical College of Georgia. He completed his internal medicine and chief residency year in patient safety and quality improvement at UTHSC before joining the faculty in the Division of General Internal Medicine and the Center for Health System Improvement in 2019.

Desirée Burroughs-Ray,  MD, MPH, FAAP
Dr. Desirée Burroughs-Ray holds a bachelor of arts in human biology from Stanford University, as well as a master of public health and medical doctorate from University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. She is board certified by both the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Burroughs-Ray completed her combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residencies through the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center, where she also served as a PGY-4 Internal Medicine-Pediatrics and PGY-5 Internal Medicine Chief Resident. 

Dr. Burroughs-Ray currently works as an academic hospitalist at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital and Regional One Health, providing world-class care to patients across multiple specialties. She serves as faculty advisor for the Internal Medicine Resident Wellness Committee and presented a workshop at a national meeting to assist other residencies in promoting wellness.  Dr. Burroughs-Ray was recognized two years in a row with Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center Teaching Award by the University Of Tennessee College Of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics. Since 2020, Desirée has served as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Internal Medicine at University of Tennessee Health Science Center and was appointed Associate Program Director of their combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency in 2021.
