Target Audience

Southern Medical Journal (SMJ) is an interdisciplinary, multi-specialty Journal, and articles span the spectrum of medical topics, providing timely, up-to-date information for primary care physicians and specialists alike. The SMJ enables physicians to provide the best possible care to patients in this age of rapidly changing modern medicine.  Therefore, the readers of the SMJ are an appropriate target for this article.

Data on expert leadership have shown numerous benefits, including enhanced job satisfaction, productivity, and job retention. Similarly, many of the top hospitals in the United States are physician led; however, the training of a successful physician and that of a successful healthcare administrator often are significantly different. The balance of narcissism and humility in leadership as it pertains to physicians transitioning from clinical careers to healthcare administrative roles is discussed.

At the conclusion of the activity, learners should be better prepared to:

  • Recognize ‘expert’ leadership and the potential benefits of using a physician to supply ‘expert’ leadership or a hospital or other healthcare organization.
  • Understand the impact of narcissistic traits on the performance of leaders and the impact of humility traits on the performance of leaders.
  • Describe the importance of leadership training and coaching to develop leadership knowledge and skills.
