Activity Description

The members of the Auburn University PEMBA Class of 2024 traveled to Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa during the dates of March 1-11, 2024. While on this trip they met with physicians, health care providers, health administrators, and others affiliated with delivering healthcare in South Africa.

Target Audience

MD, DO

Goals and Objectives

This study trip is designed for the physicians to get a deep understanding of how the healthcare system in South Africa is designed, funded and delivered. This insight will help them further understand the strengths and weaknesses of the US Healthcare System and how better to navigate that system to provide quality care of their patients.

At the conclusion of the activity, learners should be better prepared to:

  • Understand the scope and variety of healthcare systems around the world.
  • Distinguish how a nation's history, cultural, political and economic structure influences its system of healthcare.
  • Apply the knowledge of global and private health care systems to recommend restructuring of the U.S. healthcare system relative to global healthcare systems.
