Fractures of the Thumb Metacarpal

Authors: DAVID P. GREEN, MD, LT. COL. EUGENE T. O'BRIEN MC, USAF

Abstract

Fractures occurring at the base of the first metacarpal are classified. Manipulation and closed reduction with or without pinning is the usual method of treatment. Occasionally, an intra-articular fracture will require open repair and pin fixation. Roentgen examination will allow classification before treatment is undertaken.
