Abstract

AbstractThe tubular reabsorption of calcium (TRCa) is a convenient laboratory test in the diagnosis of hyperparathyroidism. Studies done in 27 patients with surgically proven hyperparathyroidism showed that TRCa was abnormal in 14 of 16 patients tested (87%). Tubular reabsorption of phosphorus (TRP), either alone or in conjunction with calcium infusion, was a much less reliable indicator of hyperparathyroidism. A further advantage of the TRCa in contrast with the TRP is that impaired renal function does not alter its accuracy.
