Abstract

Question: I am overweight, and my doctor says I have high blood pressure. Is it safe for me to take a weight loss product?

Answer: For patients who have hypertension, most physicians would advise against taking a weight loss product. There are many products on the market that contain ingredients which have been shown to cause hypertension, especially products containing ephedra. Even herbal products taken to increase energy, such as ginseng, have been linked with high blood pressure. In addition, certain vitamins and minerals may cause hypertension. For these reasons, it is important to talk to your physician about a weight loss plan, and always inform your doctor of any vitamins, herbal medications, or dietary supplements you may be taking. Diet and exercise are most often the key to healthy weight loss, and your physician can help you make a plan to achieve your weight loss goals.
