Abstract

The newer trends in psychiatric care are to diagnose and treat early those who have mental problems. In most instances this can be done on an ambulant basis in mental health clinics with, at times, short periods of hospitalization. The days of custodial care for years in an institution for the mentally ill are drawing to a close except for a minority of patients and those with severe mental retardation. Missouri is “out in front” in demonstrating some modern applications of psychiatry.
