Abstract

Obesity and associated diseases not only have an adverse effect on public health but also represent a tremendous global economic burden. The prevalence of obesity remains high in the past decade across all age groups.1 Diabetes mellitus affects 29.1 million people in the United States, and in 2012, 25.9% of people older than 65 years of age were affected. Diabetes mellitus is associated with a number of comorbidities and complications, including hypertension, dyslipidemia, heart disease, stroke, eye disorders and blindness, chronic kidney disease, amputations, and neuropathy. Diabetes mellitus was the seventh leading cause of death in the United States in 2010 and was responsible for $245 billion total healthcare costs in 2012.2
