Hurricane Katrina was perhaps the sentinel event that stirred the broad emergency response apparatus in the US to improve capabilities, protocols and procedures, and the preparation for physicians for responding to disasters.  Challenges in command, control, and communications required first responders and emergency personnel to revamp their systems.  Additional lessons learned from the Mississippi Katrina Experience can be applied to other states and communities.
