A Conversation with Dr. Michael Saag: An Overview of Monkeypox

Monkeypox has a viral infectious disease which has been rapidly spreading throughout the United States and the world. Until recently, this is not a disease that is commonly encountered by most practitioners. Practitioners need to be familiar with the clinical presentation, treatment and indications for vaccination. Because this is an infectious disease, contact tracing and vaccination in vulnerable populations can help slow the spread of this disease.

In this podcast, Dr. Errington Thompson, professor of surgery at Marshall University’s Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, and Dr. Michael Saag, Associate Dean for Global Health in the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s School of Medicine, discuss this disease’s symptomology and provide information on monkeypox vaccination.
