SMA Announces Dr. Sangeetha Isaac as Chair of SMA’s IMG Support & Advocacy Ad Hoc Committee

The Southern Medical Association (SMA) is pleased to announce Sangeetha Isaac, MD, as the Chair of the newly formed International Medical Graduate (IMG) Support & Advocacy Ad Hoc Committee. 

Dr. Isaac is a Hematology and Oncology fellow at East Carolina University (ECU). At ECU, she previously served as Chief Fellow for the Global Health and Underserved Populations Program and currently serves on the institution’s Resident Fellow Council, reflecting her ongoing commitment to trainee advocacy and leadership. With a diverse and international medical background spanning India, Singapore, and the United States, Dr. Isaac brings a wealth of clinical, research, and leadership experience to her role.

She earned her medical degree from Christian Medical College in Vellore, India, and has held various positions in internal medicine and emergency medicine across leading institutions in Singapore. After completing her internal medicine residency at North Alabama Medical Center, where she was honored with the Resident of the Year Award and served as Resident Research Advisor, she began her sub-specialty training in Hematology and Oncology at ECU.

A dedicated advocate for international medical graduates (IMGs), Dr. Isaac has served on the Board of Directors of the Southern Medical Association and chaired multiple SMA committees, including the Physicians-in-Training Committee and the Mentorship & Networking Subcommittee. "As an IMG, I’ve lived the challenges we face and I also know the strength within our stories" she said. "We carry a journey of resilience, and my goal is to transform that into lasting change through mentorship, support, and a united voice that champions equity in medicine."

Through her leadership in the IMG Support & Advocacy Ad Hoc Committee, Dr. Isaac is committed to creating an inclusive and empowering space for international physicians navigating the challenges of training and practice in the United States. She is passionate about mentorship, advocacy, and advancing equitable opportunities for IMGs across all stages of medical training and career development.
