Activity Description

This online course provides continuing education and experiential learning opportunities for practicing burn therapists, ensuring they remain current with evidence-based treatment practices and clinical guidelines. The course addresses a critical gap in foundational knowledge and skills for therapists entering burn rehabilitation, offering practical strategies to enhance competence and confidence in patient care.

Objectives - Compression Video

Upon completion of the lesson, attendees will be able to:

  • Verbalize the purpose of burn compression for scar management and optimal outcomes.
  • Describe appropriate timeline to initiate compression.
  • Verbalize contraindications to compression.
  • Describe types of custom compression.
  • Differentiate between intermediate and custom compression.
  • Describe who will benefit from custom compression.
  • Understand barriers to obtaining custom compression.
  • Describe process to measure for appropriate custom compression.

Objectives - Casting Video

Upon completion of the lesson, attendees will be able to:

    • Describe basic casting principles, purposes of casting and techniques for application, and removal of casts.
    • Understand bio-mechanical principles of casting for effective treatment of burn wounds and scars.
    • Discuss indications and contraindications for casting.
    • Review potential complications when casting principles are not considered.
    • Learn the properties of casting materials to be able to select the appropriate material for the desired outcome.
