Target Audience

Southern Medical Journal (SMJ) is an interdisciplinary, multi-specialty Journal, and articles span the spectrum of medical topics, providing timely, up-to-date information for primary care physicians and specialists alike. The SMJ enables physicians to provide the best possible care to patients in this age of rapidly changing modern medicine.  Therefore, the readers of the SMJ are an appropriate target for this article.

Goals and Objectives

Despite proven mortality benefit, disparities in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening utilization persist, especially among younger women, minorities, and low-income women, even those who are insured.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate and estimate the effects of sociodemographic and clinical variables associated with nonadherence to CRC screening among hospitalized women.

At the conclusion of the activity, learners should be better prepared to:

• Describe factors associated with decreased adherence to recommended colorectal cancer screening guidelines in the U.S.;
• Develop strategies to increase awareness and adherence to recommended colorectal cancer screening guidelines in the U.S.;
• Integrate the strategies to increase adherence to recommended colorectal screening guidelines into patient care processes.
