IMG Spotlight: Dr. Anand “Andy” Mohan
Anand “Andy” Mohan, MD, MBA, MS, is an international medical graduate whose path reflects resilience, adaptability, and a passion for innovation. After completing his medical education in India, he returned to the United States to build a career that bridges medicine, business, and technology. Today, Dr. Mohan is recognized for his leadership in healthcare IT, administration, and consulting, as well as his commitment to mentoring the next generation of IMGs. His story, detailed in his own words, highlights how an unconventional journey can create lasting impact across clinical, administrative, and global spheres:
I have always believed that one’s path in medicine can be as unique as one’s fingerprint. Although I was born in Queens, New York and raised in Southern California, I decided to pursue my medical education in India at a time when technology was far less advanced. This was before email, FaceTime, or WhatsApp. My only contact with my parents was through STD/ISD telephone booths. For context, in the late 90’s in India, “Subscriber Trunk Dialing” (STD) and “International Subscriber Dialing” (ISD) booths were small, storefront phone centers where you paid by the minute for long-distance or international calls. They were often crowded, noisy, and costly compared to today’s instant communication. Combined with snail mail, that was my lifeline home during medical school.
Despite the distance, the rigorous curriculum and immersive environment at Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute in Chennai were truly transformative. Beyond the demanding academics, I gained lifelong friendships, a broader global perspective, and leadership skills that continue to shape my career and mentoring today. Returning to the United States, I completed the USMLE Steps 1, 2, and 2CK and earned my ECFMG certification. During this period, I undertook multiple clinical rotations and observerships, which gave me insight into the U.S. healthcare system and opened doors for residency interviews. While many of my peers continued along the traditional clinical path, I felt drawn toward the intersection of medicine, business, and technology.
I first worked as a practice administrator for a hospitalist group dedicated to serving underserved communities, where I oversaw physician recruitment, managed high-volume inpatient programs, and coordinated J1/H1B visa processes for international medical graduates. This experience deepened my appreciation for the challenges faced by vulnerable populations and helped shape my commitment to health equity. Later, serving as a Physician IT Executive, I provided strategic leadership to healthcare organizations during complex EHR transitions.
These experiences inspired me to formalize my expertise in leadership and healthcare IT. I earned an MBA from Auburn University and a Master of Science in Applied Clinical Informatics from Vanderbilt University, while also becoming Epic certified in Clinical Documentation and Procedure Orders. Over the past decade, I have worked with large integrated delivery networks, community hospitals, and academic medical centers nationwide, helping thousands of providers navigate Implementation initiatives.
My journey didn’t stop at healthcare IT. I have been a podcast host for the Southern Medical Association, speaking with national leaders in medicine and technology; served on multiple advisory boards, including the Auburn MBA Advisory Board; and even contributed to humanitarian relief efforts with PADRe during the 2005 tsunami in South India. More recently, I expanded into real estate in California and Tennessee, building physician relocation and concierge services to support colleagues beyond the hospital walls.
Looking back, my path as an IMG has been unconventional but deeply rewarding. It taught me perseverance, cultural agility, and the power of bridging worlds, clinical and administrative, local and global, technology and humanity. As an IMG committee leader, I am passionate about mentoring and empowering the next generation of international graduates to achieve their dreams, whether they choose a traditional clinical career or blaze their own unique trail.
