Reflection statement for participants in this CME activity:
This article addresses well-being in the context of training programs in the health professions. The authors collected self-reported perceptions of trainees from multiple health professions at Texas Tech University. Most trainees reported at least satisfactory well-being but a sizable number of trainees indicated they were at-risk or had moderate to severe well-being concerns related to poor sleep / fatigue, hazardous alcohol drinking behaviors, severe stress levels, no significant exercise, depression, and/or self-perceived fair or poor health. Half of the responses indicated no expectation for their status to change over the 3-6 months. Current knowledge that poor well-being (aka burnout) compromises the ability of health care trainees and professionals to optimally work in a competent, caring, professional and resilient manner. This has led individuals, professional organizations, and others to address and intervene to improve well-being of trainees in the health professionals for many years. This article shows substantial opportunity probably still exists for educational programs to develop / improve well-being enhancement processes.
The importance of attaining and sustaining well-being is generalizable to all persons. Health professionals engage in efforts to improve and sustain their own well-being, the well-being of their patients, and the well-being of others outside of their clinical duties such as their families, colleagues, friends, and others. Enhancing one’s skills to identify significant well-being deficits and to implement and sustain interventions to improve well-being is part of the calling of all types of healthcare professionals. In particular, enhancing one’s skills with respect to the ability to get oneself or others to change behavior is particularly critical to having an impact.
