Reflection statement for participants in this CME activity:
This article is quite timely and important because it studies helps to define a facet of the contemporary mental health crisis in the United States with increased granularity with respect to some issues that may limit the effectiveness of interventions to overcome this crisis.
Mental health issues are very prevalent in the U.S. at present. It is likely that many readers of this article have been impacted by the mental health crisis in some fashion during the last several years. Health care professionals have likely experienced rising numbers of patients with mental health conditions. In addition, large numbers of health care professionals have struggled personally with the stress of responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. Specific examples may include highly stressful work conditions, increased mortality and morbidity rates of their patients, staffing / equipment / supply shortages, etc. Most readers are probably already well aware of that substance abuse issues are profoundly prevalent and have become a leading cause of death in the U.S. Struggles to obtain access to mental health services for patient have increased as well.
Some positive developments have occurred, too. Increased awareness and understanding of various mental health conditions has been achieved. Greater awareness and emphasis on pediatric / adolescent mental health conditions has occurred.
But a lot of work is still needed. Accessing mental health services is a key driver for further mitigation of the mental health crisis. Perhaps further improvements in access to mental health services will occur in many communities and health care systems. Access to care often is a sine quo non for effective recognition and treatment of mental health conditions for many patients and caregivers.
Several transformative changes involving mental health services have occurred in the past several years. Hopefully, additional advances will yield additional improvements in mental health care.
Perhaps reflecting on this article is an opportunity for readers to assess and improve their plan of action for optimizing their personal mental health status and their professional practice practices for evaluation and management of mental health issues involving patients and caregivers. Asking patients and caregivers about mental health conditions often is the place to start.
