Consider testing for IgE to alpha-GAL early in the diagnostic evaluation of patients with unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms that do not have a clear etiology with history and physical examination. Additionally, an inquiry should be made into the possibility of a tick bite in the recent past. In the face of a positive IgE test in patients with otherwise unexplained symptomatology, an empirical trial of a mammalian product-free diet may be indicated.
