Book Review

Atlas of the Musculoskeletal Examination

Authors: Ronald C. Hamdy, MD, Editor

Abstract

This 128-page book truly fulfills the expectations of its title. There are more pictures than text, and the photographs are mostly self-explanatory. The text merely emphasizes specific points. The book is divided into four chapters: general principles, upper extremities, spine and gait, and lower extremities. In addition, a section on fibromyalgia and a few color plates are included at the end of the book. Each chapter starts with an algorithm outlining essential signs while observing, palpating, and assessing range of motion. This is followed by a series of photographs with brief annotations describing recommended clinical tests. Specialized tests such as those used by orthopedic surgeons are not included, because the book is essentially geared toward primary care physicians. Each test is succinctly but adequately described. A detailed index facilitates finding specific tests. The book should be useful to medical students, residents, fellows, practicing physicians, and health care providers engaged in primary care, because it provides a comprehensive and systematic review of the clinical examination of the musculoskeletal system. It also should be useful to specialists who provide primary care.
