Case Report
Bilateral Perinephric Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma and Synchronous Renal Oncocytoma
Abstract
An elderly patient who presented with bilateral perinephric diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and concomitant oncocytoma of the same location is reported. To our knowledge, the anatomic proximity of the two tumors at the level of kidneys has not been previously described. Because of the patient’s other medical conditions, systemic chemotherapy was not deemed feasible. Subsequently, the proliferation had a favorable response to single-agent monoclonal antibody rituximab.
Key Points
* Association between oncocytoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma is rare, with five cases being reported in the literature.
* A close association between neoplastic epithelial cells and lymphoid infiltrates was demonstrated in Warthin tumor of salivary and lacrimal glands, lymphoepitheliomas and lymphoepithelioma-like carcinomas.
* Some researchers have linked together renal oncocytoma and renal cell carcinoma, suggesting a possible model of progression from oncocytoma to chromophobe kidney carcinoma.
* Significance of the relationship between oncocytoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma is not well understood and needs further exploration.
* The synchronicity, anatomical location, and response to therapy of both tumors suggest the possibility that paracrine products of one of the tumors facilitated the development of the other.
