Commentary on “Prevalence and Impact of Initial Misclassification of Pediatric Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus”
Abstract
“Prevalence and Impact of Initial Misclassification of Pediatric Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus” addresses an interesting and timely topic: the frequency and consequences of misdiagnosing type 1 diabetes mellitus in the pediatric population.1 The study breaks new ground by reviewing International Classification of Diseases-9 diagnoses from a state Medicaid database, permitting the examination of a much larger population than previously studied. The main goals of the study were to determine how often type 1 diabetes mellitus is initially misdiagnosed as type 2 or unclassified diabetes mellitus and to determine whether any complications occur more frequently in this “misclassified” population. This content is limited to qualifying members.
