Management of Withdrawal from Alcohol (Including Delirium Tremens)

Authors: RONALD W. McNICHOL M.D., WILLIAM J. CIRKSENA M.D., J TROY PAYNE M.D., MARION C. GLASGOW M.D.

Abstract

Alcoholism is a major problem in the nation's health. Yet the medical profession generally avoids responsibility for its management, and most general hospitals refuse admission to such patients. Though the authors outline a detailed program of management for alcohol withdrawal, they emphasize that this is for guidance and not for rigid adherence. So, too, they recognize the controversial aspects of exhibiting corticosteroids in the treatment of delirium tremens, although they believe from their experience that there is a definite place for their use.
