On Omeprazole and Iron Replacement

Authors: Musa Kazim Çağlar, MD

Abstract

I read with great interest the article1 entitled “Effect of Omeprazole on Oral Iron Replacement in Patients With Iron Deficiency Anemia.” The authors declared that the patients presented here are the first of their kind to be reported. However, this relation has been well known for a long time and is expressed in classical textbooks such as Rudolph's Pediatrics2 and Hematology of Infancy and Childhood.3 Fortunately, the use of proton pump inhibitors is seldom necessary in pediatric patients, since peptic ulcer disease is rare in children. Therefore, treatment with these drugs (and their attendant complications) is relatively uncommon in children. Widespread use of these drugs in adults should probably cause more complications than seen in children.
