CME Article: State of Maryland Sickle Cell Disease Follow-up Program: Evolution of a Public Health Program

Authors: Monika Piccardi, RN, BSN

Abstract

All infants born in Maryland are tested for sickle cell disease (SCD) and other hemoglobinopathies via blood spot screening by the Newborn Screening Program (NBS). An NBS nurse(s), upon receiving a positive blood spot for SCD, contacts the pediatrician of record to inform him or her of the results, requests a second blood screen to be done at the first newborn visit, and requests the initiation of prophylactic penicillin or another antibiotic as warranted. Once the second screen and prophylactic antibiotic are confirmed, the case is transferred to Maryland’s Sickle Cell Disease Followup Program (SCDFP).
