Use and Impact of Neonatal Intensive Care in a Nonreferral Hospital

Authors: MAJEDMUND A. EGAN MC, USA

Abstract

Abstract:Neonatal intensive care was instituted at a nonreferral US Army hospital with more than 2,200 deliveries per year. In the first two years, 10.8% of all live births were admitted to the intensive care unit. Details of age on admission, length of hospitalization, and primary discharge diagnoses are presented. Analysis showed that 31% of the admissions to the unit, representing 3.5% of the live births, used the intensive care monitoring and therapeutic equipment. Importance of the intensive care unit was shown by a statistically significant decrease in neonatal mortality using internal and regional standards with identical prematurity rates.
