Assembly Faculty Spotlight: Brian Czerniecki, MD, PhD

The Southern Medical Association (SMA) is proud to feature Brian Czerniecki, MD, PhD, as a speaker for the Association's 117th Annual Scientific Assembly taking place November 13-15, 2025 in New Orleans.

Dr. Czerniecki is Chair and Senior Member of the Department of Breast Oncology at Moffitt Cancer Center. He earned a BS in Biochemistry from the University of Maine, an MD from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and a PhD from UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson and Rutgers University. He completed his general surgery residency at The Ohio State University and a Surgical Oncology Fellowship at the National Cancer Institute under Dr. Steven Rosenberg. Before joining Moffitt, he held multiple roles at the University of Pennsylvania, including Professor of Surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine, Attending Surgeon at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and Co-Director of the Rena Rowan Breast Center.

Dr. Czerniecki's research centers on dendritic cell biology and their interaction with T cells. He has developed dendritic cell vaccines aimed at treating early-stage breast cancer and is involved in several clinical trials in this area. His research objective is to develop vaccines that can prevent breast and other solid-tumor cancers; he is working to identify molecular targets that help prevent cancer invasion and metastasis. He has authored more than 100 publications and is nationally recognized for his role in developing sentinel lymph node mapping, a less invasive method for determining cancer spread.
