Letter to the Editor

Outlining the Need for Grading Uniformity among Preclinical Coursework for Medical School Curriculums

Authors: Forrest Bohler, BS

Abstract

To the Editor: Recent trends in US preclinical medical education have shifted grading to a Pass/Fail (P/F) model. Although most schools use P/F preclinical grading, some schools still implement tiered grading systems such as the traditional A to F grading scale or a three-tiered system known as Honors/Pass/Fail (H/P/F). As a current student at a H/P/F school, I hope that this letter brings to light some of the unintended consequences related to tiered preclinical grading systems in the context of a medical education system that predominantly uses P/F grading.
