SOUTHERN MEDICAL LEGACY
It is our hope you will become part of SMA’s mission through your giving, in turn “ensuring a legacy of quality medicine through leadership and education”, which is the foundation of the Southern Medical Legacy endowment program.
The Annual Scientific Assembly
SMA's premier annual live medical conference is an annual event that includes an extensive agenda addressing topics from up-to-date methods of preventative medicine to more complex subject matter and the latest research studies. Every presentation is peer-reviewed by SMA’s Planning Committee of highly respected clinicians, ensuring that all faculty content complies with or exceeds the ACCME’s educational standards. This is an in-depth, multi-day conference during which clinicians and healthcare professionals of varied backgrounds and specialities convene in order to gain knowledge, provide improved care for patients and better understand other care providers across an ever-changing healthcare landscape.
The Southern Medical Journal
Published exclusively online, the Southern Medical Journal (SMJ) is the official, peer-reviewed, PubMed-indexed journal of the Southern Medical Association. Published since 1908 and containing an archive of more than 46,000 articles, the SMJ has a multidisciplinary and interprofessional focus that covers a broad range of topics relevant to physicians and other healthcare specialists.
PIT Leadership Conference
Dedicated to the future of medicine by developing tomorrow’s leaders of medicine, SMA’s Physicians-in-Training Leadership Conference provides opportunities for Medical Students and Residents to: present their research through abstract competitions for cash awards, participate in hands-on workshops and interactive activities designed for interprofessional learning, fulfill Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education requirements related to participation in scholarly activities, and network with colleagues from other medical schools and residency programs.
Southern Medical Association’s Virtual Abstract Competition offers medical students, residents, and fellows from all over the country an opportunity to compete for an opportunity to present their projects at the Association’s annual conference. This is a preliminary competition with the top 10 oral presentations and the top 10 poster presentations from this virtual event advancing and presenting in person at SMA’s Annual Scientific Assembly.
A Perpetual Medical Student Scholarship in Your Name
Scholarships are opportunities to invest in the future of health and are awarded each year at SMA’s Annual Scientific Assembly. A selection committee, composed of senior leadership including PIT representation, under the guidance of the SMA Board of Directors determines the qualifications of all applicants/recipients. Scholarships are awarded to students who are enrolled in an appropriate health professions school that is accredited by the corresponding accreditation body.
Since 1906, SMA, our members, their families and communities have given more than $3.7 million in financial support through scientific research grants, loans, and medical student scholarships. With the South facing a physician shortage of more than 100,000 by the year 2030, there is now more need than ever to support the journey of the next generation of healthcare leaders.
When you donate to medical education through SMA's Research and Education Endowment Fund, your generosity becomes synonymous with helping to solve the growing deficit problem. When you GIVE medical student scholarships, you not only directly impact individual medical students, but you indirectly impact countless others whose lives will be impacted by their world-changing work.
If you are a medical student and you are here to apply for a scholarship, you've come to the right place. With each passing year, the number of SMA's medical student scholarships grows. You can APPLY anytime. If your application is submitted during our scholarship application window, your application will be reviewed for consideration during that period. If you application is submitted outside of the submission window, your application will be reviewed for consideration during that next scheduled submission period.
Moreton Research Award and Commemorative Lectureship
At the 1912 Annual Meeting, the SMA announced that it would create a new award in honor of Dr. Robert D. and Alma Moreton that recognized original research. At the Annual Meeting in 1961, the Executive Director announced the association was given a grant from a foundation in San Antonio to establish a commemorative entity honoring Dr. and Mrs. Moreton.
These two events are the basis for the Dr. Robert D. and Alma W. Moreton Research Award and Commemorative Lectureship. The Award and Lectureship was re-instituted at the 2021 Annual Meeting and presented each year thereafter. The awardee/lecturer will be known for their accomplishments in clinical or basic medical research.
The physicians chosen for this award will address a topic germane to the challenges facing medical professionals seeking to improve the health of individuals or the population in the seventeen SMA States. The topic will be of interest to the broad range of medical specialties in the SMA membership.
Student & Resident Jeopardy-Style Quiz Competition
Students and Residents from the region compete for cash awards and the coveted title of "SMArtBowl Champs".
Southern Medical Mentors
The SMA Physicians-in-Training (PIT) Mentoring Program aims to foster development and growth of both established-physician or physician-in-training mentors and physician-in-training mentees through promoting genuine long-term relationships between individuals with differing levels of experience in the medical field. The SMA is the perfect environment for such a program, given that its membership is not limited by specialty or by level of training.
Webinars
SMA offers live, monthly webinars addressing relevant clinical and nonclinical topics presented by professionals in the industry. Webinars are also developed into on-demand enduring material education based on independent learning, designed as self-study activities.
