Catching Up with Benjamin Smood

August 20, 2018 // Randy Glick

Benjamin Smood, 2017 Society of 1924 Scholarship Recipient

Benjamin Smood is a 4th year medical student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham with career goals of becoming a congenital heart surgeon and remaining in academia. This September he will be applying to integrated cardiothoracic surgery residency programs.

Benjamin hopes to remain committed to translational and outcomes research, and has an interest in mechanical circulatory support as a bridge to transplant. In fact, the Southern Medical Associations 1924 Medical Student Scholarship helped to fund part of his research, and provided him the opportunity to present his results at a national conference. He first found his passion in the field of congenital heart surgery as a 7th grade science teacher with Teach for America, when he saw first-hand how early intervention in otherwise deadly conditions could allow children to grow up leading near-normal lives.

Benjamin remains committed to legislative advocacy, having served as the Chair of the Southeastern region of the American Medical Association, and the Chair of Alabama's Medical Association student sections. He hopes that his leadership in these positions will help provide him and his peers a foundation on which they can enact true change in medicine to improve the lives of their patients.

Physician Fee Schedule Proposed Rule: Understanding 3 Key Topics Listening Session

August 15, 2018 // Randy Glick

On Wednesday, August 22, 2018 from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. ET, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will host a webinar on the CY 2019 Physician Fee Schedule proposed rule.

Proposed changes to the CY 2019 Physician Fee Schedule would increase the amount of time doctors and other clinicians spend with their patients by reducing the burden of Medicare paperwork. During this listening session, CMS experts will briefly cover three provisions from the proposed rule and address your clarifying questions to help you formulate your written comments for formal submission:

  • Streamlining Evaluation and Management (E/M) payment and reducing clinician burden,
  • Advancing Virtual Care, and
  • Continuing to improve the Quality Payment Program to reduce burden and offer flexibilities to help clinicians successfully participate.

Event Registration: Register for this webinar and other Medicare Learning Network eventshere.

Target Audience: Medicare Part B fee-for-service clinicians; office managers and administrators; state and national associations that represent healthcare providers; and other stakeholders.

We encourage you to review the proposed rule prior to the call, as well as the following materials on the provisions to be covered:

Note: Feedback received during this listening session will not be considered formal comments on the rule. See the proposed rule for information on submitting these comments by September 10, 2018.

Get a FREE, no obligation, review of your company retirement plan.

Would you like a FREE “check-up” for your company retirement plan?

August 13, 2018 // Randy Glick

As a healthcare professional you understand the benefit of receiving annual check-ups to promote good health and diagnose problems early.

Your company retirement plan can also benefit from a check-up.

Get a FREE, no obligation, review of your company retirement plan.

A check-up or review of your corporate retirement plan is a great way to confirm that your plan is in compliance, identify risks, and consider improvements.

In healthcare, we see how changes in medicine, technology, and overall knowledge have a great impact on how we treat certain conditions. What was the best option last year, or 5 years ago, may no longer be optimal today, and may even be detrimental. We also understand that the body changes over time and a person in their 20's and 30's will have different issues and goals than someone in their 50's, or 70's or 80's.

Retirement plans are very similar. Regulations change frequently and what may have been the best options for your plan when it was set up 5 or 10 years ago, might be vastly outdated or out of compliance. Companies change over time as well.  People come and go, business improves or declines, competition heats up; a lot can happen that impacts the health of your retirement plan and the goals you are trying to meet.

SMA Services, Inc. wants to help you get the check-up you need and is offering a FREE, no obligation review of your company’s retirement plan.

Established in 1984, SMA Services has the experience you can rely on to make sure your retirement plan is as good as it can be.

Don’t delay, learn more about our free review, and have Mark Massey, our resident expert with more than 30 years in the industry, review your plan. There is no obligation, no pressure to buy anything, just helpful information and an expert resource to help answer your questions and improve your plan.
