Academic Health Centers and Diversity “Readiness”

Authors: Luther Brewster, PhD

Abstract

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PL 111–148) has significantly affected traditional medicine. The relatively homogenous client population of past generations has become an unprecedentedly diverse constituency. The healthcare workforce, particularly the academic health centers (AHCs) committed to preparing them, is faced with the question of how to more adequately prepare itself to serve such a diverse client population.
