Appreciating Our Shield Wall

Authors: Jawad Al-Khafaji, MD, MSHA

Abstract

As plans for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) surge ramped up in early March 2020 at our institutions, the University of Michigan Medical Center and the Department of Veterans Affairs Ann Arbor Health System, our preparations revolved around our resident workforce. The strategic clinical redeployment of these young doctors allowed our hospitals to substantially expand the number of medical teams caring for COVID-19 patients in both general care and intensive care units (ICUs).
